Export feature

Project:RUcore/NJDH/Partner Portal Search
Component:User Interface - Service Agent
Category:feature request

The specs was originally written by Joseph Deodato in 2013 and the export feature has been revised by Jane Otto (with Joseph Deodato's permission) to reflect the decision to use generic citation format. The decision was made by CISC and MDWG.

Export and citation feature has been implemented in two places

1) When viewing a full record from an RUcore search or DOI/handle resolution on the left a new option will appear, "Citation & Export." Selecting this option will offer a textual citation followed by links to export the record to:

EndNote Desktop
RIS file

Also if you have the Zotero client installed in your web browser by just viewing the record Zotero will offer the ability to import the record. This is usually indicated by a folder icon in the location bar of your browser.

2) Selected Items list now have two new options; Cite and Export. selecting those will either offer a citation listing of all selected items or the ability to export the selected items in the same formats outlined above.

To test follow both of the paths specified above and ensure proper citations are formed that comply with page 14 of the following specification.

<a href="https://rucore.libraries.rutgers.edu/collab/ref/spc_steering_r7_4_r7_5_versioning.pdf" title="https://rucore.libraries.rutgers.edu/collab/ref/spc_steering_r7_4_r7_5_versioning.pdf">https://rucore.libraries.rutgers.edu/collab/ref/spc_steering_r7_4_r7_5_v...</a>

Also export records into all citation management tools specified in this specification:

<a href="https://rucore.libraries.rutgers.edu/collab/ref/spc_sawg_r7_3_select_items.pdf" title="https://rucore.libraries.rutgers.edu/collab/ref/spc_sawg_r7_3_select_items.pdf">https://rucore.libraries.rutgers.edu/collab/ref/spc_sawg_r7_3_select_ite...</a>

Attached is the MODS to RefWorks and RIS/EndNote mapping I did.

This request came from the initial Select Items specification. I am assigning it to Rhonda for testing or re-assignment.

I was able to successfully create a Citation list.

I was able to successfully export a single record to RefWorks, and export a set of selected record to RefWorks. It successfully populated the RefWorks entry with Reference Type, Title, PubYear, DOI, Periodical, Full [journal title], Volume, Issue [how did you do that? -- I need to include that in my RefWorks map], Descriptors [subjects, keywords], Language, and Data Source (Rutgers).

First minor problem with the selected items "Cite" list. Where there is no descriptiveEvent, the date is missing. From the specification (spc_steering_r7_4_r7_5_versioning_pdf): If there is no date in the Descriptive Event’s dateTime subelement, use one of the Origin Info dates, taking the first encountered, in this order: dateIssued; dateCreated; copyrightDate; dateOther.

Second minor problem with the selected items "Cite" list. The specification shows that the journal title and volume/issue that is taken from a descriptiveEvent should be in italics, but the entire text of the citation is in a single font style (normal). This is the part that is italicized: <rulib:descriptiveEvent type=”citation”> <rulib:associatedObject><name>, <rulib:descriptiveEvent type=“citation”> <rulib:associatedObject><rulib:identifier>

First minor problem with exporting to RefWorks. It is assigning it Reference Type: Book, Whole. I believe it should be Reference Type: Journal Article.

Second minor problem with exporting to RefWorks: Authors and other information is not always exported. On the whole, I understand that more explicit citation format mapping is necessary, and I have re-started that conversation with the citation manager experts and MDWG.

We need someone else to test other citation formats.

For "First minor problem with the selected items "Cite" list." I used the mappings in the "R7.5 – Select Items – Deodato – 8/01/13 rev. Otto/Mullen 7/26/14" document that was circulated in August but, unfortunately, never finalized. I used this document because it was my understanding that it contained all relevant information for this feature. In this document it is very vague as what to do in the event there is no descriptive event. An example is how do I determine it is a journal article and the fact that it references two other specifications. This wasn't clear at all to me.

For "Second minor problem with the selected items "Cite" list." What is shown in the specification in the diagram isn't possible on the web. The mockup calls for a modal with a &lt;textarea&gt; of easily selectable and copyable citations. You cannot style &lt;textarea&gt; like you do a Word Document mockup. The citation is styled in the full record view as requested, since it's possible. Example : <a href="https://rucore-test.libraries.rutgers.edu/rutgers-lib/201669/#citation-export" title="https://rucore-test.libraries.rutgers.edu/rutgers-lib/201669/#citation-export">https://rucore-test.libraries.rutgers.edu/rutgers-lib/201669/#citation-e...</a>

For "First minor problem with exporting to RefWorks." I sent out a few emails about this mapping during develop and got no feedback. This Reference Type tag is required and needed a mapping, so I made one. I mention this in comment #2 and sent an email to Jane and Rhonda and cc-ed Laura and Kalaivani on September 22nd about needing the mapping. Please look at the mapping file attached to comment #2; it lists the possible options and "Journal Article" isn't listed, maybe another option in the list would be better. The same can be said for the EndNote/RIS mapping, Type of Reference is required, I asked for mappings, got none, went ahead anyway. So those need to be reviewed as well.

For "Second minor problem with exporting to RefWorks: Authors and other information" Yingting brought this up last week and it was placed in software.libraries(<a href="http://software.libraries.rutgers.edu/node/2867" title="http://software.libraries.rutgers.edu/node/2867">http://software.libraries.rutgers.edu/node/2867</a>). As you noted the mapping needs to be revised and sent to me for the update.

Since a number of issues were listed maybe we can start to break out the individual issues as separate items in software.libraries.

I also need to clarify and correct something I stated. I see in my intial comment #1 I stated I used the mapping for citation in this specification:

<a href="https://rucore.libraries.rutgers.edu/collab/ref/spc_steering_r7_4_r7_5_versioning.pdf" title="https://rucore.libraries.rutgers.edu/collab/ref/spc_steering_r7_4_r7_5_versioning.pdf">https://rucore.libraries.rutgers.edu/collab/ref/spc_steering_r7_4_r7_5_v...</a>

In comment #5 I did an about face and by saying I used the mappings in the "R7.5 – Select Items – Deodato – 8/01/13 rev. Otto/Mullen 7/26/14" document.

Comment #5 is the more accurate one and I apologize for the confusion. If any good comes out of this maybe now we can see how confusing it is having multiple specifications with the same/similar mapping information in them that also direct me to use other specifications. All very confusing.

After discussing with Jane and Chad, I'm marking this as fixed.

We still have some work to do with mapping. Rhonda's Refworks mapping is slightly different than the mapping used by Chad and the mapping done by Jane Otto. I spoke to Jane Otto, and she said that we can use the expanded mapping (done by Chad). So we can update the original Select item specs to include the expanded version of the mapping.

There are a couple of questions about PB, PP, DO and RD in Rhonda's mapping. Perhaps we can take this back to MDWG (this was originally discussed at MDWG and Rhonda and Jane volunteered to do the mapping), and finalize the mapping and tweak Refworks mapping in R7.6.
