Facilitate thumbnails for videos retrieved in Google search results

Project:RUcore SOLR Searching and Indexing
Version:8.x
Component:User interface
Category:feature request
Priority:normal
Assigned:chadmills
Status:Moved to JIRA
Description

Do a google search on 'pet tricks' (or see attached) Note that in search results, videos are displayed with a thumbnail. This does not happen when RUcore videos are retrieved in a Google search. Investigate how we might get thumbnails displayed with our resources and report back.

Since Jeffery has worked with Google Scholar, I am assigning this request to him.

This might be a good place to start, Google has video sitemap specs.

It does look like a new sitemap may be in order for these.

The last comment was posted on July 16th, 2013. What are we doing about this?

Version:7.4» 7.5

I haven't had an opportunity to investigate this yet because of other priorities. I'd still like to do it though, so am only pushing it out a bit.

Version:7.5» 7.4

This is "below the line" for R7.4: Google video sitemap with thumbnails (size of thumbnail). If it is not done in R7.4, it moves to a required component of the next release.

Use these guidelines from Google:
<a href="https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/156442?hl=en&amp;ref_topic=2370565#1" title="https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/156442?hl=en&amp;ref_topic=2370565#1">https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/156442?hl=en&amp;ref_topic=2370...</a>

Notice that thumbnails must meet a minimum size requirement (160 x 90 pixels) which is larger than our standard thumbjpeg (80 x 80).

Please put together a specification for a Google video sitemap with thumbnails.

Moving to R7.5.

The video sitemap schema is considerably more complex than the regular sitemap schema. Whereas we can generate the regular sitemap simply based on a set of Fedora PIDs, the video sitemap would require us to fetch certain descriptive metadata fields from the objects listed in the sitemap. I would like to do this carefully in consultation with our Google contact, Anurag, as there are several possible issues. For one thing, they seem to suggest that they require http URLs to the videos:
"Google can crawl the following video file types: mpg, .mpeg, .mp4, .m4v, .mov, .wmv, .asf, .avi, .ra, .ram, .rm, .flv, .swf. All files must be accessible via HTTP. Metafiles that require a download of the source via streaming protocols are not supported." We need to make sure that out https links will work. There may also be the issue of the thumbnail size, though I would like to ask about the following, which could be promising:
"Google will identify representative thumbnail images for your video pages based on the information found on your site, in your Sitemap, or in markup. If you provide the content location—the URL of the video file—we can automatically generate thumbnails from your video."

#9

Version:7.6» 7.7

I have not had time to work on this for 7.6.

#10

Version:7.7» 8.1

This will be the first release attempting to implement a Google video sitemap. We cannot tell yet if it will work as they say and whether we will need to make changes (as we did with the original sitemaps). If the sitemap does work as they say, it should cause Google to generate thumbnails. If not, we may have to create new thumbnails and submit them separately.

#11

Jeffery,

What is the status of this?

Version:8.1» 8.x

I think we still need to get together to create a video portal so that the video script can be used without grabbing up things we shouldn't. That was going to be part of a larger change in the sitemap functions, moving to portal based lists. For video, I think it was also waiting for the new, resized thumbnails to be in place.

Implement with the development of a video portal
