ETD import: No ARCH1, PDF, XML and thumbnail in the object XML if thumbnail generation fails

Project:RUcore Workflow Management System (WMS)
Version:7.0
Component:File Upload Module
Category:bug report
Priority:critical
Assigned:martyb
Status:closed
Description

Attached is a PDF that failed when batch imported. The error message in the file upload log says:

Error getting image orientation for /workarea/rucore00000000001/64302/master/original-1-00064302.pdf -> no dimension returned.
Error converting /workarea/rucore00000000001/64302/master/original-1-00064302.pdf to /workarea/rucore00000000001/64302/thumbnail/thumb-1-00064302.jpeg

When this error occurs, the rest of the file upload process fails. No ARCH, PDF, XML and thumbnail in the object XML, but the object can be ingested without any problems.

There are about 12 January ETDs that had similar issues.

I am unable to attach the PDF. It is "rutgers-lib-36685_1.pdf" in yang's folder on t:drive.

ImageMagick complains that the pdf file uploaded (rutgers-lib-36685_1.pdf) has errors. This is the direct reason for the WMS error message you observed. Recreate pdf using most updated software may kill the problem. However, people have been saying that the error message generated by Ghostscript (which ImageMagick uses) is fake. So next step may be that we should upgrade the Ghostscript software to see if this is indeed the issue. -YY

Upgrading ghostscript didn't seem to remove the error/warning message from ImageMagick output. A workaround fix is put into place to look for orientation output regardless error/warning has been generated. Test when release 7.0 moves to rep-devel/test site. -YY

Marty,

Please make sure this is fixed when testing ETD import.

I uploaded rutgers-lib-36685_1.pdf in WMS and ARCH1, PDF, XML and thumbnail were all created by WMS successfully.
