Using a hyperlink in a collection records full view returns zero reults.

Project:RUcore/NJDH/Partner Portal Search
Version:7.0
Component:Searching - Service Agent
Category:bug report
Priority:normal
Assigned:chadmills
Status:closed
Description

When clicking on a hyperlink in the full record of a collection record does not return the collection record in the results list. This might even return zero results if the collection record is the only holder of the searched metadata. Since collection records are excluded by default from a search if not resource type is specified the collection record is being excluded behind the scenes at the time of the query.

I looked into further. I think we should punt this for discussion in a 6.x release and disable hyperlinking of the Collection name in the full record display.

The issues are:

If a collection is hyperlinked and a user clicks on it the collection object might not be part of the portal, thus returning zero results.

If a collection is hyperlinked and the collection is part of the portal we should probably search on the rucore000000 ID and not the collection title. Without doing that it is fairly unreliable as is. This would be really confusing in the user interface if a user then Edits there search. This rucore00000 value would appear in the search form.

Should we disable hyperlinking until 6-x then?

We should not disable hyperlinking of the collection name (label) on resources. The scenario of searching collection type and then also clicking on a collection label hyperlink is pretty remote, though it raises interesting questions of user-searcher expectations.

The zero-result scenario would remain whether we searched on the ID or the label, so I think searching on the label is still OK.

The issue of whether the search filters should be continued throughout the search session (i.e., continue to search only on typeOfResource="collections" through a hyper-linked search) deserves more discussion and I have thrown out a straw poll of the User Services & Apps WG.

The consensus of my informal email query to the User Services WG is: while a savvy librarian might want a hyperlink-initiated search to expand beyond the initial parameters, the more casual user (non-librarian) would be confused.

The search filters should be continued throughout the search session. I would interpret it to mean this:
"Edit My Search" continues the search filters (for choice of search portal, Types, Order by, and Results per page).
Clicking on hyperlinks in a record continues the search filters.
"Begin New Advanced Search" reverts to default search settings for the search portal.
